The Mighty Mopane: Tree of Life in the Lowveld
Hi there! I’m Happy, your ranger here at Casart, and I’d love to tell you about one of my favourite trees — the Mopane tree.
You’ll find Mopane trees all over this area, especially in the lowveld. They’re easy to spot with their butterfly-shaped leaves, and their wood is so strong and termite-resistant that locals have used it for generations to build homes, fences, and fires.
But what makes the Mopane really special to us is the Mopane worm. This little caterpillar lives on the tree and is an important traditional food in many South African communities — rich in protein and harvested with care. I grew up eating them, and they’re still part of many rural diets today.
For me, the Mopane tree stands for strength and survival. It gives life, shelter, and food — both to animals and to people. It’s a true symbol of how nature and culture come together here in the bush.
See you on the next drive!
